ISML Topaz Necklace

Statistics and images drawn from the ISML 2013 statistics page.

Looks like another heavy bias once again for the Topaz.

Contestant SDO/3 % to tie first

And once again another ridiculous lead from the #1 contestant. Misaka's gonna need some strong support if she wants to see a necklace this year... not to be contemtpuous or anything, but let's see if she can pull the same amount of voters like she had on her match against Kanade... but to come up with a 15+% deficit over Mashiro, Eu, and Taiga doesn't seem plausible.

Among the contestants here, my support would go to either Eu or Kirino. Since Kirino is at too much of a deficit and has garnered too much hate over the end of the series, I'm going to put my vote on Eu. Not sure how I would weigh the moe-ness between the two of them, they're both pretty moe but the both have their un-moe flaws, Kirino being totally immature and Eu, well, not having much of a personality being practically a mute. However, I do think Mashiro has the contest in the bag pretty much. She's a strong contestant with no losses in her division of the regular season.

Guess after the spiel from the previous post, I've run out of juices for things to say. Sad that Azunyan will be out of it for the necklaces this year, and I believe her time has passed. Well, gotta move on to the new.

On another note, looks like after Kanade lost, Ruri was able to pull of a win against her. I think it would have been more difficult for Ruri if Kanade's streak was still running. Unfortunately, I forgot to vote the last round, but congrats to Ruri for going through this season unmarred.

By the way, here's the full table for the ISML matches. Match table. Just save the HTML code into an .html file and throw the file into your favorite browser.

Anywho, voting comes up tomorrow, so be sure to vote for you favorite character for the necklace! :3

Oreimo Season 2 Ending

So I finally watched the last 3 OVAs, and thus finished the second season of Oreimo, and here are my thoughts about it.

ISML Match Table

One of the things about the previous 2 ISML tournaments I missed is the javascript match viewer. I liked selecting a particular opponent and see how well they fared against other opponents, as well as which opponents the haven't went up against yet. It was a little clunky in use, but I thought it was a neat and practical tool.

Well, I don't know much javascript, but I was at least able to whip up some code to generate a table based off the ISML webpage.

Once again, the images are pulled from the ISML 2013 webpage.

Hmmm... that's kind of annoying. Looks like the generated HTML is too big for a live journal post. Guess I'll have to settle with screenshots and links to the code.

See the screenshots!Collapse )

The generated HTML

The data - As you can see all I did was run to the statistics page and copied the contestants from the list. This is also why the graph ended up mostly red on the bottom and green on the top... the list I copied was ordered by contestant rank. The rest of the data is just copy paste HTML code from the ISML website. In particular I copied and pasted the HTML from the match cards section and parse the data here to retrieve the information I want, namely character names and number of votes for the match. On a smaller note, I had to make a modification to remove unicode characters from the names... like Louise's.

The generator - Written in java. As you can see from the data, the code is tailored specifically for the data. If you modify the source data, the code won't work. The code uses regular expressions to match specific patterns from the copy pasted data.

ISML Topaz 1 Thoughts

FYI Lots of random disorganized thoughts in this post.

So it looks like the huge match between the big two, Kanade and Misaka, happened on Sunday. This day in particular seemed to draw in a lot of voters.

Anywho looks like Misaka bested Kanade 8758 to 8079. Congrats to Misaka for stopping Kanade's 100+ win streak.

I thought I wasn't annoyed by it, but I guess I must have been so for it to be noteworthy enough to be writing a post. Though I must say I'm not as upset as the time the Kanade was shut down from the Tiara in... 2011 was it? My appeal for Kanade has long since declined since she won last year, and both of them are close enough in power that it really could go either way. To be honest, I think this 100+ win run Kanade is on is pretty ridiculous.

Still doesn't change the fact that I still consider her more moe than Misaka though. I don't have anything against Misaka, I think she's cute and all, but she doesn't have that moe gyun effect on me. Maybe watching the next season of the index/railgun series will change my mind, but as I've mentioned before, I tend to prefer the quite / dere types over tsun types. That's just my tastes.

A lot of people on the forums are excited that Kanade was finally taken down. But I really can't help but think it's just a one time deal. I feel like the reason for Kanade's fall are because of anti votes from being too popular or too successful. Not that Misaka was the more moe character. In this sense I don't really feel that this is not really much of a moe competition anymore.

On that line of thought, I also feel like this is becoming less about moe. There are some characters here where I have no idea how people see them as moe, like Rikka's sister Touka. I get no moe vibes from her at all and don't understand how she's popular enough to be able to have a chance of making it to the post season. To each their own I guess...

As much as I'd like to support my favorites, Azusa and currently the new comer Suguha, I don't know if I'll be participating in future ISML after this year. I'll just use it as a reference for moe anime to watch.

ISML Emerald Necklace

Statistics drawn from the ISML 2013 statistics page.

It's that time again. For the emerald necklace we have a huge bias:

Contestant SDO/3 % to tie first

This is even more ridiculous than Asuna's previous lead. Aside from the fixed matchups from the ISML staff to "make things more interesting", I hear that SDO sniping goes around. How this works? You find out who your favorite character is matched against for the given necklace. Then you give her opponents as much a boost in SDO as possible by anti voting their opponents (farming). Then proceed to demolish them when they face your favorite. I'm not sure if this can happen as I don't believe that ISML releases the opponent schedule. Which means people will have to try to predict the schedule... though I suppose that does get easier as every round passes.

Anyway, chuunibyou fans rejoice, as Rikka has the lead by 5%+ over the runner up Mashiro. Kobato and Misaka follow with ~8% and ~9% respectively. So unless Mashiro can somehow miraculously rack up some huge fanbase out of nowhere and get a 5.16% number of voters over Rikka, it's pretty much safe to say Rikka has the necklace. Even Misaka's popularity of last round was only able to get her a 2% lead over Asuna. Since lopsided matches like this split the hardcore fans who stick their guns and those that give up and vote near the top, I think it's pretty much decided.

Sadly, I don't think Azunyan will ever hit a necklace. She's always getting trumped by one big shot or another, and K-On is on the decline. ;_;

On another note, I'm surprised at Ayase's popularity. I guess the last few eps of Oreimo 2 has really given her a huge boost. Even enough to beat Kirino... though I hear spoiler sounding "It's because of volume 12" was what killed Kirino's popularity.

Honestly, no one from this group strikes me as well. I found I tend towards those that are more deredere and quiet types as moe. Certainly Rikka is cute with her little "hau~" every time she gets hit. Mashiro sort lacks the deredere as it seems she's emotionally dysfunctional. Kobato is just non moe imouto, Misaka is too tsun, Kuroyukihime lacks dere (although I think she is prettily drawn), Shana in the same boat as Misaka. Ayase is an awesome character, although her yandere fits are scary (and amusing)... so she also falls a bit short of moe as well. :< I think I'll just go with Ayase, as these are all personally mid tier characters for me.

Anywho, voting comes up tomorrow, so be sure to vote for you favorite character for the necklace! :3

ISML Ruby Necklace

Statistics and what not drawn from the ISML 2013 statistics page.

Tomorrow comes the Ruby necklace showdown. Here's how things are looking:

Contestant SDO/3 % to tie first

Don't know how it happened, but Asuna has a HUUUUUUUUGE lead over the rest of the opponents. I think the only character that might be able to match her is Mio, unless some unprecedented blowout with Misaka or Mashiro happens. But we're talking about a roughly 10% gap separating Asuna and the third place and below girls. Realisticly only Mio stats a chance with only a 4.4% gap. That's where my vote is going.

Now I'm not a Asuna hater. I totally love Asuna, as I loved the Sword Art Online series. But while I really liked Asuna, I unfortunately did not get moe vibes from her. To me, she's just a typical girl. No gyun from her at all. It almost seems like it takes something specific / abnormal to hit that moe spot for me... huh.

Azunyan got destroyed again for this round, facing both Taiga and Mio. Sadly Azusa still can't take down Mio, and I just don't get the impression she ever will. And among the other I'm cheering for, Suguha, is so far not looking to make the cut for the finals. :<

From this group, the only one who strikes my fancy would be Mio, but on my list, she's on the lower end of the upper tier moe characters. Next would be the upper end middle tier characters in this order: Rikka, Taiga, Asuna.

I've decided to remove the votes for in the statistics since, as mentioned before, it doesn't really give a good image as it depends on who your opponents were for that round. A weaker contestant might have a higher vote for count than a stronger one, if she beat a bunch of low levels, while the stronger one barely fought off tough opponents.

On a side note, I've finally decided to code up a quick thing in Java to generate this table for me, given a specific tab delimited unicode text file. The file is generated from excel, after I've formatted the data properly. I was inserting the values manually at work before hand. Yea... bored at work. The only thing I need to manually put in is the thumbnails, since those aren't inputted into my spreadsheet.

Anywho, voting comes up tomorrow, so be sure to vote for you favorite character for the necklace! :3

ISML Amethyst Necklace

Statistics and what not drawn from the ISML 2013 statistics page.

The Amethyst necklace showdown is coming up on Thursday. Here's how things are looking:

Contestant SDO/3 Percentage difference needed to tie current
first place
Votes For

Once again, Azunyan was knocked out of the chances for a necklace when pit up against the ever increasingly popular Kuroneko. ;_; I gotta admit that the last few eps of Oreimo 2 have increased her moeness. However, unlike Kuroneko, Azunyan is one of the few that has the moe gyun effect on me.

Seems like 2012 is repeating itself as Kuroneko is practically a shoe in for the Amethyst necklace, yet again with almost a 3 percent lead over the next in standings. It's not impossible for Mashiro or Kuroyukihime to pull a defeat over the rising Oreimo star. They seem to be popular with the fans, and there may be enough anti-Kuroneko/anti-Hanakana/anti-repeat-winner sentiment to knock off Ruri. Even Shana could pull this off despite her decline in popularity, if her fans rally enough votes. After all this is one of the few necklaces that Shana has yet to add to her collection (the other being the Topaz).

Once again, I've added the votes for in the statistics so you can get a feel of how popular the character is. I might consider taking that section out... now that I think about it, the "Votes for" are a bit biased as it depends on who your opponents were for that round. A weaker contestant might have a higher vote for count than a stronger one, if she beat a bunch of low levels, while the stronger one barely fought off tough opponents.

Once again, this particular group doesn't really have many candidates that strike my moe fancy. Although I like a number of the characters in the group, they just don't hit the right spot, the way Azunyan or Sunohara Mei (sadly, not a contestant) does. As for the cuter ones in the group, I'd have to go with Ruri, Eu, or Rikka... but as the latter 2 are a long shot from winning, I'm going to throw in my support for Ruri.

Anywho, voting comes up on Thursday again, so be sure to vote for you favorite character for the necklace! :3

ISML 2013 Aquamarine Necklace

Statistics and what not drawn from the ISML 2013 statistics page.

Here's how things look for the Aquamarine necklace:

Contestant SDO/3 Percentage difference needed to tie current
first place
Votes For

Azunyan was slated for a chance at the necklace, but unfortunately on the last round got put up against the brick wall of Kanade and so got pushed down with her one loss. ;_;

Anywho, looks like there's a considerable chance Kanade might take another Aquamarine necklace. She does have a 2+ percent lead over other contestants. While not impossible it is a considerable climb considering Kanade's surprisingly continuing popularity. Then again, who knows what may happen. People tend to want change and not to support consecutive necklace winners, so Kobato and Mashiro might have a chance. Kuroyukihime will need a miracle. As for the rest, try again next time.

I've also added the votes for in the statistics so you can get a feel of how popular the character is. It seems almost definite that Kanade will be the winner. The only doubt I feel keeping her from winning is what I've mentioned earlier on how double winners aren't all that popular.

This particular group doesn't really have many candidates that strike my moe fancy. Was thinking of voting Kirino to support my favorite Taketatsu contestants in the running. Though if you were to ask me who I would think is most moe in this group, I probably would go for Kanade.

Anywho, voting comes up on Thursday, so be sure to vote for you favorite character. :3

ISML 2013 regular season started!

Jeez, I totally sound like a walking ISML ad, since that's all I've been posting these days, when I do post at all. Anyhow, I have a few new favorite characters this season, aside from my normal Azunyan and co.: the imouto gang, Kirigaya Suguha and Araragi Tsukihi. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be doing all that hot. I guess their types are not all that popular, unlike Kodaka's sister, who is surprisingly #2 on the charts. After the first 4 votes and their under 50% vote ratio, I don't entertain any hope of them reaching the finals. And Suguha was one of my favorites of the seasons ;_;. Well I guess there is still a ways to go before the end, though I think it unlikely, maybe something will change.

Anywho, regardless of whether you support my favorites or not, go vote! :3
